Anhinga is a water bird of the Darter family that is closely related to Indian, African and Australian Darters. Anhinga is native to warmer parts of North and South America. The word Anhinga comes from Brazilian Tupi Language, which translates to ‘devil bird’ or ‘snake bird’. Anhinga is also called by other names such as Snakebird, American Darter or Water Turkey.
Anhinga is a fish eater with dark plumage and long neck with an average body length of 35 inches, wingspan of 45 inches and weight of around 1.4 kg. It swims in the water with its neck only above the water level. With the colored neck only above water, the bird appears like a snake ready to strike and thus the name snakebird. Anhinga can remain the water for significantly longer periods. With wet wings, it finds it hard to fly easily. Therefore, after coming out from water, the bird keeps the wings stretched to dry out its feathers and wings.
