Tri-colored Heron is a medium-sized heron of southeastern United States, which were earlier known as Louisiana Herons. They are resident breeders from the Gulf States of the USA and northern Mexico, south through Central America and the Caribbean to Central Brazil and Peru. Their breeding habitats are in subtropical swamps where they nestle in colonies with other herons on platforms of sticks in trees or shrubs.

Tri-colored Heron is a medium-sized heron with long and slender neck and bill, bluish-grey head, dark back, dark neck with a white line and white belly. They have a long, pointed, yellowish or grayish bill with a black tip. In the breeding birds, there are long blue filamentous plumes on the head and neck and buff plumes on the back. They stalk their prey in shallow or deep water, often running and chasing to grab their prey. Tri-colored herons make a soft, nasal moaning sound. They feed on fish, crustaceans, reptiles and insects.  Size of Mallard:Weight around 400 grams, Length 60-70 cm and Wingspan around 90 cm.

House Finch is a medium-sized finch that can be spotted abundantly in the cities, suburbs, parking lots, roadsides and gardens. Most of the house finches are permanent residents. Their common breeding habitats are urban, suburban and semi-open areas in the East as well West from Southern Canada to Northern Florida. Throughout the year, house finches can be found visiting bird feeders at various locations in the cities.

Adult male birds have a long square-tipped brown tail. They have brown colored back with a deep grey shading on the wing feathers. Their bill is short and thick with top rounded edge. Head, neck and shoulders are reddish, red color may sometimes extend down to stomach and the back. Intensity of colors in male birds varies with the season, color being often derived from the berries and fruits of its diet. Their call is a rapid, cheery warble or variety of chirps. They forage on the grounds and in vegetation eating grains, seeds and berries and small insects. Size of House Finch:Weight 16-29 grams, Length 13-14 cm and Wingspan 20-25 cm.

Double-crested Cormorant, member of Cormorant family of seabirds, is a widespread species of birds across North America from Alaska down to Florida and Mexico. Their breeding habitats in inland waterways and along the coastal areas. Besides, they can also be often found on river bays and along lakes and ponds. During winter, they migrate to ice-free zones along coastal areas.

Double-crested Cormorant is an all black except a small patch of orange-yellow facial skin. They get a small double crest of black and white feathers during winter seasons. They are a large waterbird with a stocky body, a long neck, webbed feet, and a blunt, medium-sized bill. Their plumage is dark colored. They mainly feed on fish, sometimes on amphibians and crustaceans, and hunt by swimming and diving in water. Since their feathers are not waterproof, they dry out their feathers before flying. Their vocalizations include deep guttural grunts. Size of Double-crested Cormorant: weight 1.2-2.5 kg, length 70-90 cm and wingspan115-125 cm.

American Coot, often confused with a duck, is a common waterbird inhabiting wetlands and open water bodies. Their breeding habitats are in marshes from southern Quebec to the Pacific Coast of North America and as far south as northern South America. Despite being weak fliers, they have a great stamina once airborne. They need a great deal of efforts to become airborne, often pedaling across water with their feet for quite sometime before lifting off.

American Coots have a distinctive all black body with a white, triangularly shaped,  chicken-like bill with a black mark near the tip. They have white stripes on the sides of their undertail. They are omnivores and their diet consists of plant materials, arthropods, fish and other aquatic creatures. They catch their food items by diving in water and also by foraging on land. They make their nests in a well-concealed location in reeds. Size of American Coots:Weight around 600 grams and Length around 40 cm.

Belted Kingfisher is a large and noisy water kingfisher. It is the only member of water kingfisher that is commonly found in United States and Canada. Their breeding habitats can be found near inland bodies of waters or coasts across most of Canada, Alaska and the United States. Species of warmer locations are permanent residents while birds from northern areas migrate to southern area when the water freezes.

Belted Kingfisher is a stocky and medium-sized bird with a weight of 140-160 grams, length of 28-35 cm and a wingspan of 48-58 cm. They have a large slate blue head with shaggy crest and a long, black heavy bill with grey base. They have a large white collar, large blue band on the breast and white underparts. Female birds are more brightly colored than males. Their back and wings are slate blue with black feather tips. Belted kingfishers can be often found perching prominently on tree tops, lamp posts and other suitable poles close to water before plunging in water for catching their prey. They feed on fish, crustaceans, frogs, aquatic insects, lizards and small mammals.
