Song Sparrow is a medium sized common sparrow or American sparrow that can be found inhabiting in bushy, and marshes including salt marshes across the most of the United States and Canada. Besides, they are also found abundantly in human populations, agricultural areas and roadsides. Southern species are permanent residents while northern birds migrate to Southern United States or Mexico, where there is a significant resident population all-year. Song sparrow can be often confused with Savannah Sparrow and Lincoln’s Sparrow

Adult song sparrow have brown upperparts with dark streaks on the back. Underparts are white with a dark streaking and a dark brown spot in the middle of the breast. They have a grayish face with streak through the eyes, a brown cap and  a brown long and rounded tail. They forage on the ground, in shrubs and in shallow waters for eating insects and seeds. Birds foraging in salt marshes also eat crustaceans. They nestle in sheltered locations on the ground, in shrubs or trees. As the name goes, song sparrow are  well known for their persistent singing throughout the Spring and Summer. Size of Song Sparrow: Weight 15-50 grams, Length 12-17 cm and Wingspan 18-25 cm.

Sandhill Crane is a large crane of North America and Northeastern Siberia. Their habitats can be found in marshes and bogs in central and northern Canada and Alaska and parts of mid-western and southeastern United States, Siberia and Cuba. They make their nests in marshy vegetation or on the ground closer to water.

Adult birds are gray with red forehead, white cheeks and long dark pointed bill. Their legs are long and dark and trail behind in flight. They have a long neck that remains straight in flight. Juveniles have reddish brown underparts and grayish upper parts. Both the sexes look identical but the sizes may vary depending upon the species. Sandhill cranes give loud trumpeting calls. With a large wingspan of up to 6 feet, sandhill crane is a very skilled soaring bird similar in style to hawks and eagles. Birds can stay aloft for many hours by utilizing thermal columns of rising air in the lower altitudes of earth’s atmosphere. They feed on insects, rodents, seeds, berries and aquatic plants and mammals. Foxes, coyotes, eagles, wolves and bobcats are their natural predators.

Bald Eagle, National Bird and Symbol of the United States of America, is a Sea Eagle and Bird of Prey. They can be found all over North America and Canada near large bodies of open water with abundant food supply and trees for nesting.

Bald Eagle is a large body with a length of 28-42 inches, a wingspan of 72-96 inches and weight of 6-15 pounds. Female birds are larger than the males by around one fourth of the sizes of males. Adult birds have a brown body with white head and tail, bright yellow irises, taloned feet and a hooked beak. Younger ones are completely brown except for their yellow feet. Plumage color is identical in males and females. Bald eagles feed primarily on fish by swooping down and snatching the fish out of water with its talons. Wild varieties can often live for thirty years while birds in captivity can survive even longer. They make the largest nest among the nests of any North American birds. Size of their nest can be 13 feet deep, 8 feet wide and a weight of 1 tonne.

Common Yellowthroat is a breed of New World Warblers that are abundantly found in North America, Southern Canada and Central Mexico. Birds from northern regions are migratory and move to southern parts of breeding range during winter season, often to Central America and West Indies. Southern species are mostly permanent residents.

Common Yellowthroat birds have brownish backs, yellow throats and white bellies. Adult male birds have black face masks bordered by grayish color. Females are almost identical make birds except that they have no face masks. Depending upon the race of the birds, the facial patterns and the brightness of yellow under parts vary in the male birds. Common Yellowthroats make their habitats in marshes and wet areas with dense vegetation and shrubs. The birds make cup-shaped nests in low areas in the shrubs or vegetation where they lay 3-5 eggs. They would rarely make nestle in dry areas. Common Yellowthroats feed on insects captured in dense vegetation.

Common Grackle is a large Icterid (group of small to medium and often colorful passerine birds), which breed in open and semi-open areas of  North America east of Rocky Mountains. Most of the birds are permanent birds while some of the birds migrate in flocks to the southeastern United States. Common grackles make their habitats in a cup-shaped nest in shrubs and dense trees, usually near water. They also nest in natural cavities or man-made structures.

Common Grackle is a 32-cm long bird with long dark bill, pale yellow eyes and long tail. Their plumage is an iridescent black or purple on the head. Female birds are slightly smaller in size and less glossy. The birds forage on the ground, shallow waters or in the shrubs in large flocks. Their diet includes insects, minnows, frogs, eggs, berries, seeds, grain and often small birds. They are omnivorous birds. Common grackles often steal their food from other birds.

Cedar waxwing is a member of waxwing family of passerine or perching birds, which can be often found in the woodlands in North America, Southern Canada and Northern United States. Small clusters of bright red feathers on the wings is the most prominent feature of Cedar Waxwing birds. Bohemian Waxwing is the closest relative of Cedar Waxwing.

The birds weigh around 30 grams and are about 16 cm long. Their tail comes in the shades of yellow to orange depending upon their diet. The flight of the cedar waxwing is strong and direct, often with a flying speed of 25 mph and flying height at 200 feet above ground levels. The birds make high-pitched whistle like sound. During winter season, large flocks of birds can be found in gardens for berry bushes and to drink water from fountains. They mostly feed on berries and sugary fruits; however, insects become the important parts of the meals during in the breeding season.

Canada Goose is a goose (common English name for number of birds including swans and ducks) native to North America. Canada Geese can be found in Canada and Northern America in diverse varieties of habitats in elevated areas near water streams, lakes and ponds, largest populations being in the Great Lakes Region. Large flocks of Canada Geese have established permanent habitats in the Chesapeake Bay and in the James River Regions of Virginia. Besides, significantly great populations of Canada Geese are also found in the parks and golf courses of Scottsdale, Arizona.

The species of Canada geese have a large black plumage, neck and head. The size of the birds and details of plumage vary with the subspecies of Canada Geese. Canada Goose is 30-43 inches long with a wingspan of 50-70 inches and weight of about 7-14 pounds. Female birds look almost identical the males except lower weight and a different honk. Adult male birds are very aggressive in defending their territories. Canada Geese feed on grains, grasses, green vegetation, seaweeds and sometimes on insects and small fish.

Baltimore Oriole, State Bird of Maryland State, USA, is a very small blackbird. The name of the birds is derived from the colors of male birds that resemble with the colors on the ‘coat-of-arms’ of Lord Baltimore. A Major League Baseball Team in Baltimore, Maryland has been named “The Baltimore Orioles”after the name of birds. Breeding habitats of Baltimore Orioles can be found in the deciduous forests in the eastern North America.

Baltimore Orioles are very small birds with an average weight of 35 grams and length of 18 cm. The adult birds have pointed bill with white bars on its wings. The color of male birds is yellow on its underparts, shoulder patch and rump and black on the rest of the body. Female bird is yellow-brown on the upper parts and dull orange on the breast and belly. Male birds make a loud flute whistle type of sound. They feed on insects, berries and nectar by foraging into trees and shrubs and making short flights to catch insects.

Savannah Sparrow is a small American sparrow that can be found in various open habitats throughout most of the North America from meadows to marshlands and from temperate coastal areas to tundra. It is named after Savannah, Georgia, where one of the first species of the bird was discovered. It breeds in Alaska, Canada, northern, southern and Pacific coastal USA, Mexico and Guatemala. Pacific and Mexican birds are resident, but other populations are migratory, that migrate from southern United States to northern Canada. It is a very rare vagrant to Western Europe.

Savannah sparrow is a small songbird with brown or grayish-brown overall body, yellowish eyebrow stripes and streaks on back, breast and flanks. It has a medium-long, notched and all brown tail. Its legs are pinkish; eyes are dark brown and horn-colored bill. It is 11-15 cm long and has a wingspan of about 20-22 cm. Its call includes a sharp, high pitch and a slow series of repeated notes. They usually forage on the grounds or low bushes, eating seeds. In the breeding seasons, they can also be found eating insects. In the winter, they form flocks and migrate.

Northern Cardinal is a brilliantly colored bird of cardinal family from North America. In seven states of USA, northern cardinal holds the title of state bird. It can be found in shrub lands, woodlands, gardens and swamps from southern Canada through the eastern United States from Maine to Texas and south through Mexico to northern Guatemala and Belize. It was once prized as a pet however; its sale as cage birds is now banned in the United States.

Northern Cardinal is a medium sized songbird with a large crest on head, heavy and conical red bill and face surrounded by black. Male birds are entirely brilliant red and females are grayish-tan with red tails and wings. It has a distinctive crest on the head and a mask on the face that is black in the male birds and gray in the females. It is about 21-23 cm long and has a wingspan of about 25-31 cm. It is mostly granivorous but also feeds on insects and fruit. Its call is a series of clear whistles.
