Pie Bird

Pie Bird

Pie birds are available  by a few names including whistle, vent, funnel or chimney. They’re usually hollow, ceramic figurines which are about 3 or 4 inches tall in size. It is having a hole at the top for the steam to escape through, and an arch at the bottom for the pie juice to enter. They are mostly available in shapes like birds, but they also come in other shapes as well. In fact, pie birds are considered collectibles, and the rarer shapes are highly sought by collectors.

As a pie bakes, the middle portion has a tendency to collapse, particularly if the pie is very juicy, and this can look deformed. So the pie bird acts as a support  in the middle of the pie, holding up the top crust so that it cooks crisply and evenly. These have been placed in the meat pies and center of fruit since Victorian Times. A piebird is a fanciful baking accessory that has a very real, practical function for a baker. Pie bakers everywhere should  own at least one pie bird!

Parrot Perch

Parrot Perch

A pole or rod, usually horizontal, that serves as a resting area for birds. Although bird perches may seem insignificant at the time of purchase they are of great importance. As parrots spend the majority time standing on their feet, comfortable perches allow them to stand comfortably. Perches should be selected based on the parrot’s size and type. The material chosen for a perch should be non-toxic as the birds are known to chew on them. Some perches are branches from tree.

Perch placement is also important. The perches should also be placed in proximity to food and water dishes so that the birds can easily access them. However, perches should not be placed directly over the other perch or food or water dish, in order to avoid contamination from the bird’s droppings. The easiest way to find out the best perch for your bird might be to experiment with different styles.
